ALLEGED PERJURY.
Before Mr R W. Dyer, ■____ in the Police Court this afternoon, an Epsom married woman named Annie Savers -was charged with having comm't.ed perjury on November 6th during the hearing of a charge against her. "»lr J. C. Martin defended the accused.
Sub-Inspector Black, who prosecuted, informed the Court that tbe accused had been charged with tbe theft of two pieces of lace and a piece of silk from tbe shop of Messrs John Gourt, draper, of Queen-street, She was fined £10 for stealing the lace, but not eon-
vieted oi theft oi fri Ik. He then called | three oi Mr Court's assistants, -who repeated tbe evidence given in the theft charges. This was to tbe effect that tbe accused was seen putting the pieces of lace into ber kit. When she was charged with the theft she declared that sbe did not know why she came '■ to take them. Cross-examined by Mr Martin, one of tbe -wimesses said the j accused's phrase might have been, "*i I don't know bow I came to take it." Tn Court the accused swore that the i la.cc must have been accidentally and ! _____nsciou£]y picked oil the counter when sbe turned out her kit and was j i_p_i_rng the articles.
