BOROUGH MEETINGS.

PARNEXX. The Parnefl Borough Council met last night in their temporary office at the Fire Station. Present: Mr John Fltt (Mayor), and Crs. Basley, Edgcumbe. Tapper, Briggs, Lusk, and Fowler. Accounts.—Accounts were passed for payment totalling £l_o 11/o. Office Improvements.—On the motion of Cr. Basley, It was resolved to nave the borough offices painted insiue, at the aditional cost as tendered by tne contractor. All further business was adjourned for a fortnight SIWMARKKL The ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held In the CouncU Chamber last night. Thoee present were Messrs F. Bennett (Mayor), Crs. E. Davis, L. La Roche, R. Holmes, H. Kinder, C. i* mes McColl. and A Seccombe. The Mayor (Mr F. Bennett) and Cr. H. iiinder were appointed to act as the CouncU s delegates on an advisory committee to represent the New Zealand International Exhibition, 1806-1907. It was decided, in reply to a request to tne Council, to draw the attention of the contractor of the drainage works in Union street to the lack of adequate lighting of the works and the proper fencing of the trenches. A petition from residents of Railway terrace asked that a four-inch pipe be laid in the ten-ace instead of the three-quarter-inch pipe now existing.—The matter was referred to the Waterworks Committee to report as to the cost With reference to residents' connections to the main drain now being laid, a motion was agreed to on the recommendation of the special committee to, the effect, "That the notice already sent to property-owners be amended to the effect that all propertyowners will be required to connect with the drain now in course of construction within 14 days of the completion of the drain by their property; all drains to be done hi accordance with the engineer's specification. The Council would draw attention to the fact that the contractor for the drain is prepared to do the work at a schedule price, particulars of which are to be obtained from the Town Clerk." GBEY LYNN. The Grey Lynn Council met last night Present: The Mayor and all the Councillors. Drainage.—When the minutes of the special meeting of the CouncU 'vere read, recommending the adoption of Mr H. M. Willi's plans for further drainage .in the borough. Mr Martin said the plans were In such a fragmentary state that it was Impossible to connect them. He moved that the adoption of the plans be deferred.—The Mayor said the plans before the Council were merely the levels, size of pipes, and estimated cost of doing the work. The details would come In when tenders were called for. the works. Kin- Street—J. A. Warnock asked that King street permanent levels be fixed and the road formed as far as Stanley street, as he wished to fence his property at the corner of King and Peel streets.—The matter was referred to the Streets Committee.

Exhibition Committee. — Messrs Donald, Sayers. and Murray were appointed to attend the meeting of committee In Auckland in respect to fittingly represent Auckland "t the New Zealand International Exhibition,

Fire Brigade.—Superintendent J. McDermott wrote stating that should a fire occur between DisraeU and Chamberlain streets or between Chamberlain and Arnold streets, off Rose road, the brigade would be able to cope with it, having plenty of hose.—The report was adopted.

City Water Mains.—Mr .Martin raised the question as to whether It would not be wiser for the city to lay the 23-inch mains in the streets Instead of on the footpaths, as proposed.—Mr Smith supported the proposal of Mr Martin.—The Mayor pointed out that the permission had already been given to the City Council, as the committee had power to act.—Mr Martin moved that the City Engineer be waited upon with a view to discussing the matter with him, and ascertaining the reasons why the footpath was preferred instead of the roadway for the pipe track, also to see If the latter course could not be adopted.—j.nis was agreed to. —Mr Martin asked In the event of One of the 22-lnch mains bursting under a verandah and damaging the stock in a shop, would Grey Lynn Council be liable, after giving permission to place the pipee there?— The Mayor said he presumed the City Council would be responsible.

Water Supply. — On the motion of Mr Smith It was resolved, "That the charge for water supplied by meter now charged at 1/6 and 1/4 per 1000 gallons for A»nyber Pass or Ponsonby reservoirs respectively /be deduced to 1/3 to 1/ per 1000 'such retractions to take effect from June--Ist. 1905."

Overdraft. — The Town Clerk suggested that the overdraft limit be Increased from £2400 tr> £3000.—This was agreed to on the motion of Mr Sayers, seconded by Mr Creamer. Pollen Street.—The Mayor moved that the question of repairing this street be referred to the Streets Committee, which was agreed to. Surrey Crescent Footpath.—Mr Murray once more urged the completion of the widening of this footpath. — Mr Sayers moved that this work he done at once. — The Mayor said the work was no doubt necessary, but he asked the Council to consider also the financial position of the borouph at the present juncture. — Mr Dlmory said he had property at Richmond h'-t did not see that this work was a necessity.—Finally the motion was deferred on the sui-jestlon of Mr Smith, in order to get an estimate of the cost of cutting the footpaths to the permanent level. ONEHUNGA. The ordinary meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held at the Council Chamber last evening. The town clerk announced an overdraft of £351 15/9. Road Roller.—Mr Ashley Hunter, C.E.. recommended that a road roller bo built in two sections, and loaded with water to weigh five tons. As the roller could be made at n month's notice, the matter was left in abeyance. * Mnnsolei'in.—Mr J. Bonsbil wrote asking for permission to erect v mausoleum at Waikaraka for the wife of one of his clients.—Left In the hcurt* of the Cemetery and Reserves Committer. Refining.—Mr G. J Garland informed the Council that he would not again stand for a seat on the Hospital and Cnaritablp Aid Board, and thanked the Cauncil for the support accorded him during the last five years.—Received, Mr Garland to be forwarded a letter of thanks for hi« past services. Accounts. —The town clerk read accounts amounting to £258 18710, which were passed for payment. White Swan-road.—lt was acreed on the motion of the Mayor to vote £20 to the Mount Koskill Road Board for the purpose of repairing White Swan-road, over which the Onehunga night-soil carts pass. Tenders. —The following tenders for felling and removing the large trees in the park were received: —J. A. Skinner, £27; H. Bray and Co., £25 10/. For felling an_ partly destroying or removing same: J. A. Skinner, £17; H. Bray and Co.. £17.—Conelderation of tenders held over. Waterworks. —The Council in committee recommended the adoption of Mr Ashley Hunter's report, that a new boiler be erected alongside the present one at the Onehunga pumping station and at a cost of £450. —Deferred for a fortnight. Reptic Tank.—Agreed that plans be secured for septic tank, and for a road to the site; also that waste clinker from the pit be used foi filling in the road approach. Building By-law.—lt was resolved to adopt the recommendation of the Building Committee, and reduce the tees to the following rates:—New buildings, 20/ for first-class and 10/ for second-class; additional living room, 2/6; outbuildings exempt, except factories; porches, breakwinds, and new foundations, ]/; stables of four stalls, 2/6: extra stalls, 1/ each.
