THEFT OF JEWELLERY.
■ The Caledonian Hotel, at the corner of Karangahape-road and Symonds-st., was robbed last week, the thief securing quite a large haul of jewellery. Inquiries were made by the detective force, and yesterday Detective McHveney arrested a man named Thomas Tapp, whom he charged with the theft. Tapp was brought before Mr R. W. Dyer, S.M., this morning, charged with having stolen from the dwelling of Ellen McManus, proprietress of the hotel, a quantity of jewellery valued at £36 5/. The articles alleged to have been stolen included a gent's rolled gold watch and chain, a lever watch, ladies* watch, ladies' muff chain with a jewelled butterfly pendant, ladies' neck chain with turquoise brooch, ladies' gold albert, five gold brooches, two gold dress rings, a Kruger half-sovereign, and five gold bangles. Chief-Detective Marsack secured a remand in the case for a week, stating that the accused was arrested last night in consequence of his attempt to pawn some of the missing jewellery.
