m ' A meeting of ratepayers of P_jmuera ; was held in the St. Mark's Hail last • evening to authorise a poll for __? raising of a loan of £27:50 to complete the drainage scheme of the south-western j portion of the road board's district. j i The Hon. E. Mitchelson, chairman of I . the Road Board, presided, and Mr. T. I • Cotter., the Board's solicitor, was also in j at tendance. ; The chairman said Mr. Mestayer'scheme, which had been before the di.-s- . t trict for twelve months past, tva.s simil- j ar to that pro-posed for the city of Auck- j land, in which rfoptic- tanks were inylud- ! cd. The City Council had considered it • , desirable to submit the scheme for tlie j ; consideration of a second engineer, whose j , report was now beinji prepared. Tr | Road Board thought it would be in the | best interest* of Remuera to defer the j , linal adoption of the Remuera scheme til! that report was available, and this ac ] . counted for thfe delay in adopting the . . scheme. The law allowed them to adopt ; , a sectional scheme. Drainage waa a very | , important question in the interests of public health, and only a short time ago ' ther« were several cases of diphtheria i in the particular square covered by the j present scheme. The carrying out of the work was entrusted to Mr. Metcalfe. | - who had had considerable experience r- ! •'' drainage construction, and bis plans, in j volvinjj on outlay of about £2750, were j ' available for inspection. The interest and j sinking fund would be covered by a rate j Of 9.1-ths of a penny in the pound onp the capital. He formally moved the adoption of a resolution in favour of the loan. ... . r Mr. Dickson seconded, and without - discussion, the motion was unanimous- , D lv tarried. | " The cliairman said a poll would be j taken in accordance with the Act within j three weeks.
