"THE TIMES" REPLIES.
3RITISH SUPPORT OF JAPAN. RUSSIAN DANGERS IN EUROPE. (Received 7.25 a.m.) LONDON. August 28. " The Times," commenting on its New York correspondent's despatch, says : '" Nobody will be surprised and all parties will be gratified if it turns out that the Anglo-Japanese Treaty has been renewed and extended. What will cause surprise is the imaginary snperstroctare erected in the deductions of the plenipotentiary, tve do not believe that there is the fraction of a foundation for the audacious theory witb regard to the wishes of Great Britain and the expected fresh offer. The only peace we wish for is a peace which shall be secure and permanently satisfactory to Japan and the objects for which she entered on tbe war. Sbe alone can judge what tbe terms must be. "It is true," adds " Tbe Times," "' that we do not wish that Russia should lose her place in Europe, and for that reason Great Britain is anxious that she should accept tbe just and reasonable terms offered." " If those terms are rejected Russia will almost infallibly suffer disaster, .crashing her authority and influence in * Europe equally •witb Asia."
