■ ACXX)TJNTASrrS -JJ-EGED DEFALCATIONS. £2000 MENTIONED. The former accountant ol the Auckland Racing Club, Percy A. Daw; on, who was arrested at Fiji on a warrant charging him wi-h stealing £500, the moneys of the club, arrived in Auckland last night on the Taviuni, under the escort of Lieut. E. A Barnett, of the Fijian police. It was expected that the accused would be seen in the Police Court this morning, and the general public were well in evidence at 10.53 o'clock, ignorant of the fact that Dawson had been taken before Mr C. C Kettle, SAL, at 10 o'clock. The arrangement was agreed to or the magi-trate in order to suit the convemonce of Mr Mays, the Crown Solicitor's representative, who was required at the Supreme Court at 10.30 o'clock in connection with the retrial of Dr. Orpen. Mr Mays applied on behalf of the Crown for a rem?-id until Wednesday next. He mentioned that the amount of the alleged defalcation, was about £2000. Mr Fred. Earl, who represented the accused, did not object to the remand, but asked that his client should be allowed reasonable bail. The remand was granted, and bail fixed at two sureties of £500, with the accused's own recognisance of £500. The sureties were provided.
