Mr B. W. Hamilton, of Waingar<£ has resigned his commission as J.P. Dr. A. T. Scott, M.B. (Glasgow) has been appointed public vaccinator at Waipu. Constable Win. Sjfton has been ap- X pointed clerk- of th_**'_ourt at Hohourawhere sittings of the Magistrate's Court are in future to be held. Mr Alex. Marshall has been appointed a member of the Taupo Domain Buard. Captain Howard Kerr, R.N., hits resigned his position as trustee of the Mission Cemetery at Tauranga. Mr W. T. Penny, who has filled a responsible position in the Hamilton office of the Loan and Mercantile Company for more than two years, has decided to return to South Africa, where he held a lucrative post during the war. It is his intention to leave New Zealand during October. The death ia reported of Mrs Jane Hooks, of Te Pahi Bay, Waiheke, at the age of 84 years. She was one of the old identities of the province, and had resided at the island for many years. She was a daughter of the late Sergt.-Major Bawson. She was very popular all the years she was on the island b cause of her hospitable welcome to visitors, _ty whom she will be much missed. Mr W. E. MeKenzie left by the Rarawa from Onehunga this afternoon to join the Auckland representative football team. He will play in the Wellington and Wanganui matches as w.ngthreequarter. The match against Taranaki is proceeding this afternoon. The Black family of musicians, who went to Fiji six weeks ago for a holiday, returned by the Taviuni last night. They gave professional performances at Suva, Levnka, and in other parts of the islands, having the patronage of the Governor and his suite, the Ministry, and other influential people there. Miss Ixellie Black's fine voice and artistic singing secured her a warm welcome' everywhere. The family begin a suburban tour of Auckland next week, commencing at Parneil on Monday.
Miss T?aldren, the lady instructor of the new Whangarei Technical School, has arrived in Whangarei, and next week classes in the selu ol will be started. Mr S. Luke (chairman of the Education Board) goes up to Whangarei to perform the opening ceremony, and Buch members of the Board of Education as go up to the Northern township for the function will be entertained by the citizens at supper on Friday night.
The remains of the late Mr Roderick MeKinnon were interred in St. John' 3 Cemetery, Te Awamutu, last Wednesday afternoon by the side of his late wife. The deceased gentleman left his native land, the Isle of Skye, Scotland, with his wife and family in June, 1873, arriving in Auckland by the ship St. Leonard on the 29th September, 1573. Mr McKinnon died at the age of 92 years, leaving five sons and 21 grandchildren to mourn their loss.
A pleasant function took place at Messrs Bradney and Binns' offices on the ! Queen-street Wharf this morning, when I Mr Geo. Taylor, who has be?n promoted j from assistant wharfinger for the Auck- I land Harbour Board to the po-ition of i signalman at the Mount Vic:oria Sta- 1 tion, was presented with a maible clock ; by the stevedores and others whose business takes them down to the wharves. Mr J. H. Bradney, in making the presentation, referred to the esteem in which Mr Taylor had been held dur- j ing the twenty-three years he had been i on the wharf, and the efficient manner | in which he had carried out his duties j to the satisfaction of all with whom he {
came in contact. The gathering dispersed after singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fel?ow."
Mrs Hill, wife of Mr Charles Hill, head of the firm of Ball and Sons, hatters, in Wellington, died at her residence on Saturday, at the age of seventy-six years. The deceased lady had been ailing for a long time past, and for several months it was known that the end could not be far off. Mrs Hill was well known in Auckland, where the family lived for many years before moving to Wellington. Mr John W. Hill is an officer of the Tourist Department, and Mr Alfred Hiss is the wellknown musician and composer. Mrs Mclndoe, of Dunedin (nee Miss Mabel Hill) and Miss Minnie Hill are the daughters.
