WITNESS CONFESSES.
' SEQUEL TO A CHARGE OF THEFT. Two young men named Richard Green and David Green -were recently cotnmit- ! ted for trial on a- charge of having i stolon the 511 mof £19 15/ from the I dwelling of Eliza Harper, of Coburgi street. They have not yet been dealt. I with in the Supreme Court, and the case this morning took a new turn, one of the witnesses for the prosecution, a girl of 18 named Hilda Gillan, being also charged with the theft. She came before Mr C. C. Kettle, S.M., in the Police Court. Chief-Detective Marsack stated in prosecuting that the case was a very painful one. The money was stolen from a box in a bedroom at Mrs Harpers house, and tTie accused lived there. William Thomas Harper, the owner of the money, being her uncle. She kept company with one of the (rreens. and it had turned out since their committal for trial that the accused, GiTlan. took the money at the instigation, of Richard Green. She had made a full confession, and had stated that she intended to plead- guilty. Evidence was then given by William Thomas Harper, who said that he had identified some of the stolen coins which had been found in a box at the lodging? of ih<fr men Green. Acting-Detective Shine produced a statement which the accused had made to him. admitting that she had taken the money, and alleging that it was at the instigation of Richard Green, to whom she handed the money. In reply to the magistrate, the witness said he did not suspect that there was any arrangement between the Greens and the accused ihat she should now come forward with the confession. Formally' charged in Court. Gillon pleaded guilty, and was cemmitted for sentence at the Supreme Court. The police did not object to bail, which was fixed at a surety of £50.
