H.M.S. PEGASUS.
The iirrival of H.M.S. Pegasus—a third-class cruiser—from England last week created some sir in Farm Cove, the rendezvous of the Australian Squadron. The Pegasus has been sent, out to take the place of the Mutine. and she should form a valuable addition to the fleet under 11h> c-onmand of Vice-Admiral Sir A. I). Fanshawe. The Pegasus bears a striking resemblance to the Prometheus, which preceded her. In fact, they arc sicter shipn. The engines are I of 7000 horse-power, and speed 20 knots, the coal capacity amounting to '.'-500 tons. The. Pegasus tarries eight 4in puns, eight 3-puunders, aDd two ma-chine-gun*. The Pegasus left Sboerness on March 10, a.ud had a trying time in thi- Bay of Biscay, heavy gales and mountainous S;e.as beinc; encountered. These storms. "t will be rememterecl. played great havoc amongst the shipping off the British const. The Pegasus, however, proved herself a good sea boat, and escaped without serious injury. Calls were made by the warship atGibraltar. | Malta, AJen, Suez, Colombo and Ba- '■ tavia, the Pegasus coaling at each port.
