ALLEGED PERJURY.

GUM MERCHANT

As a sequel to the judgment by Mr McCarthy, S.M., yesterday in the" esse of Thomas Lees and Sons v. Arthm Milsom Edmonds, gum merchant, whez His Worship directed the prosecutksi of the defendant on. a charge of perjury. Edmonds was arrested on a warrant by Chief Detective Marsack and Detective HoUis this morning. The -warrant charges him with committing perjurj at a sitting of the Magistrate's Coart on March 23 and 30 on the hearing of the claim by Thomas Lees and Sons against the accused for £220 due upon a bill of exchange drawn and accepted by T^jm

The case was called before Mr K. Dyer, S.M., this morning, when Chief Detective Marsack asked for eight days' remand.

Mr B. Hackett, who represented tat accused, stated that he had sarrendered when he heard that the proceedings were to be taken. The ease arose out of a decision which was under appeal. It would, he suggested, be more consonant with fairness to the accused if the .charge of perjury was adjourned from time to time until the appeal in the civil case was decided. Security for costs in the appeal case had been fixed at £250, a considerable sum, and the accused's liberty was t*gg«»n-K»l to th* prosecution' of this appeaL He asked that light bail should be fixed.

His Worship granted the re-nand, and fixed bail in the accused's surety of £200, and two others of £100 "each. He stated that he would agree to one substantial surety of £200 if there was any difficulty in securing two.
