REAL IRISH.
THE BAD LANGUAGE OF A DEAF MUTE. L.USUOS, February 11. Daniel McAreavy was placed In the prisoner's dock at the Belfast Police Court last Saturday, and a policeman got into the witness bos, and on oa'li bwore taut he had ••run In" Daniel for curslnjr tnt; Pope, and using language n:>t only unlit for publication but calculated to provoke a •riot. Daniel was asked if he had anything to say in his defence, but he simply irrored the magistrate, who therefore lined Mm 40/, with the alta-u«!we of 14 day* iv gaol. Not having 40/ about him, McArtiTy was removed 1o the cells and tue Bench proceeded with, another rase. Jn t!>e middle thereof an office caire into too Court and held a waispj-e.l cous»Jtntion with the clerk. He iv turn he'd the Eiajpstrete's ear for a r.e-v minutes, Liid tten there was a sudden explosion of judicial wrath. The mas: strnte v,:is uot angry without reason. He had been made , a fcoi of by the police. Mi'Arcavy, the man he had sentenced fjr using purple language, had turned out t<.. be a deaf ii.ite! He had beeu arrested <>a a warrant for assaulting his wife and mother, and was by a mistake of the Court otncials sent into the dock in place of the Pope-cursing culprit, and had been sworn to as that individual by the constable who arrested him.' The magistrate naturally liad some hard words to say to the erring policeman, whose conduct in identifying McAreavy as tho man arrested for riotous behaviour was, as the prosecuting counsel justly remarked, • •monstrous." The fine was, of course, transferred to the real transgressor, and as McAreavy's wife and mother did uot put in an appearance to prove tue assault he was released. As McAreavy bore no resemblance to the real transgressor, the constable's mistake was inexplicable, and the good people ot Belfast are wondering whether the authorities will deem it expedient to retaiu Ala valuable services.
