ALLEGED THEFT OF GOLD
INVERCARGILL, this day,
At the Supreme Court John Cheyne was acquitted on a charge of goldsi ealing at Waikaka. Alexander Beliarey, who was the principal witness against Cheyne, was convicted of theft of gold and sentenced to six months' hard labour. A divorce case", William J. Kidd v. Ann Kidd, and E. Wallis, in which £500 damages are claimed, is now being heard. SUPREME COURT SENTENCES. WELLINGTON, this day. Mr Justice Cooper this morning passed the following sentences on prisoners committed from the lower Court:— Michael Wheeler, alias Frank Mumford, causing actual bodily harm, one month; Albert Goodal, alias John Willis, theft and breaking and entering, five years. Prisoner had been previously convicted in Australia. His Honor said this class of crime must be put down. Thomas Francis Shanaghan, for forgery, got two years' imprisonment. CONSTABLES CHARGED WITJd PERJURY. WELLINGTON, this day. Dr. MacArthiir, S.M., this morning announced that he had ordered information to be laid against Constables Gibson and Horley, who swore that James Kennedy (charged as an idle and disorderly person) was in Wellington on Boxing Day, whereas it was proved that he was in Pahnerston North. Mr Wilford, counsel for Kennedy, demanded that the constables should be prosecuted for perjury, hence Dr. Mac Arthur's action. PALMERSTON N. this day. In the Supreme Court J. H. Towers, charged with a breach of the Bankruptcy Act, was acquitted. Stephen Gannon, for forgery, two charges, got 12 months on each concurrently; Margaret Hymers, bigamy, three months. In the latter case His Honor said he would have admitted the prisoner to probation had she confessed her wrong instead of choosing to swear falsely and present a concocted letter to the Court.
