DEATH OF A SAILOR.
FELL FROM ALOFT
Boatswain Walter Gordon, of the Hobart brigantine Corin, berthed at Quaystreet Jetty No. 2, met with an instantaneous death this morning by falling from aloft. He was high up in the rig ning of the foremast, and appears to have lost his balance. In falling he struck two of the ratlii es in the rigging, which were broken by the force of the impact. Gordon then struck his head on the edge of the wharf, falling into the water. He sank immediately and did not rise again, indicating that he was dead before entering the water. The police recovered the body shortly afterwards with the aid of a grappling iron. When the body was examined it was found that the" neck was broken, which was no doubt caused by the deceased's striking his head on the wharf. The body waa removed to the Morgue, and an inquest will be held at ten o'clock-to-morrow morning. Gordon was 2S yeara of age, and belonged to Hobart. The Corin was to have eailed for Whangarei and <!ri Rlia to " ni ß nt » b «t in consequence of this accident her departure has been postponed until to-morrow or later.
