The following story illustrates the large capacity th.it the avprajre Irishraan has for Suppressing the truth, telling the truth, and mistelling the truth, all in the same sentence, and with tie same set of words. Tho master of the Irishman in question had a cow which fcp wished to sell because she was so bad tempered that the risk of milking her was all but impossible.. So he said to Pat, "Take her to tlie fair, Pat, but I forbid you to tell any lies about her; tell the <truth, the whole truth, and nothing bnt the truth." "I will that; ye may be sure of nje, sorr," replied Pat; and off he went. In due course "he came back, but brought twice the sum his master had eipeefed as the proceeds of the sale of the cow. Naturally, the owner suspected his , servant of telling nnti-attis. and said, "Pat, you're been telling lies about her." '"Vhe divil a bit of a lie havo I Told about her, sorr." "How is it you've got so much for her, then? What did you say about her?" "Sure, they axed mc if she was a good milker, and I says, says I, 'It's tirfod of milfciug ncr you'd be afore you're dons with-her, sorr!' and that's as true as gospel" : :
