AUSTRALIAN CABLES.

ME. TAVERNER'g HASTY DEPARTURE. (Received 9.13 a.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. Mr. Taverner, Agent-General for Victoria, returned to London in the last steamer via America, in order to resume his duties in Victoria street, Westminster. He went to Sydney on the understanding that he would return to Melbourne to consult the Government with reference to the future management of the Agency, but sickness delaying him, he sailed from Sydney without visiting Melbourne. After consideration by the Cabinet the Premier has written to Mr. Taverner condemning his hurried departure, and informing him that he should have returned and ascertained the wishes of the Government, concluding: "I cannot but regard your action as highly censurable."
