WELLINGTON. Monday. The annual report of the Wellington Harbour Board's secretary and engineer •.vas submitted to the meeting of the Board to-day. The report states that un October 1, 1903. contracts for works on which liabilities were likely to accrue were estimated at £48.547. Contracts for works were let during the past year amounting to £28.091. Payments were made of £27-957. and there remains a known liability accruing in respect to contracts in Eand of H 48, 994. The secretary suggested that the Board should onre more urge upon the Government the neeesaty of placing another light at Pencarrow Head. The number of permanent employee? of the Board at September 30 was 204. of whom 178 had their lives insured, towards the premiums of which the Board contributed £000. the total sum assured being ~ 35,4(55, or an average of £' 188 per employee. Most of the insurances are of the endowment type, maturing at 60 years of age. The tonnage of goods received in the year from British and foreign ports amounted to 136,747 tens, an increase of 20.552 tons over the previous 12 mouths, having increased two and a-half times in 10 years. The tonnage received from colon in 1 and coastal ports increased by 15.855 tons, from 1-22.801 ton.; to 1.38.65U tons, and has more than doubled in 10 years. The general transhipments increased by 0218 tons in the year -and have nearly doubled in 10 yeans. Die tonnage passing over the wharvea during the year amounted to 368.254 tonkas compared with 316,599 tons in the previous ypar. and 170.223 tons 10 years previously, a growth of two and one-sixth times in the decade.
