BE THE SANITARY SERVICE DISPUTE.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—As one of the late employees in the above dispute, I would like to place before you our position in reply to that, given by Mr Jagger. As it has been believed by the men for some tune past that for some reason unknown their services were to be dispensed with, and other men taken on one at a time so that the old hands should teach them their duties, we felt that we we_ bein- very unfairly treated. But .the first e/cuse to discharge one of us soon arrived; when one man stopped home from work one night, although he placed another man in his place, and his work was done with satisfaction, he was discharged at a moment's notice. Then on the following Friday the second man was told he would not be wanteu after the morrow. The manager was asked for the reason of discharging the second man, and the men were told to mind their own business. We, the remainder, thought it best to resign our position than wait to be discharged after we had taught the new -en their^ork.-I^m, \ responsible official of the Sanitary Company, upon beiug asked whether there was ever any intention to weed out the men, staled most emphatically that there was not. Further, that as a Whole they were well qualified and did their work satisfactorily, and would, it was believed, 3e hard to replace. When the men as a body gave peremptory notice it was too late to fill their places that day. and the service had perforce to be neglected till the new men were obtained. Fortunately, said the manager, they were obtained readily, and though some of them are new to the business, the service is being carried out ac usual. THE MISSING SHAMROCK. (To the Editor.) Sir,—The yacht Shamrock has been missing for the past two weeks, and not a single attempt has been made by the Government to search for her. The steamer Lady Roberts is lying idle at Devonport. and I see no reason why she should not be used in the much-needed search.—l am. etc., YACHTSMAN.
