The real cause of the war, he said. j 1 was that the Russians were unaware of the fighting qualities of j their opponents. j He considered that the turning- ' point of the defence was the ar- j 1 rival of the Japanese 11-inch guns. . He expressed genuine surprise on I I learning cf the defeat of General £ —opatkin. and added that it -as quite useless for the Baltic fleet to proceed to the Far East.
