WOOL SALES. KEEN COMPETITION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day. The first wool sale of the season opened this morning, when 6300 bales were catalogued. There waa a large attendance of buyers. Bidding was extremely spirited when compared with the first sale of last season. Prices advanced from threepence to fourpenee per lb. In some cases fine bright cross-bred* sold up to a shilling and a halfpenny a lb. There was keen competition for pieces up to eightpence. At the wool sales the top. price, was one shilling and a penny for a tliree-quarter-bred line. LONDON CA3LE. (Received 5.45 a.m.) LONDON, January S. Silver, 2/3 15-W. Copper, on spot, i6S 16/3; at three months, £«> 16/3. At the rabhlt skins auction 1888 were offered and 1867 sold. The best advanced, si penny, wnile low furrwl sneters sold at pnr to a halfpenny decline. Sheep: Canterbury, light 43d, medium 4fd, heavy 4Jd; Dunedhi and Southland, none offering; North Island, 4#d. Lambs, none offering. Beef, force 3d. hinds 3gd. Kiver Plate sheep: Heavy 3 11-16 d; light, 32d. Beef, force. 2 11-16 d; hinds. 3id. The hemp market is quiet and unchanged. MABKBT QUOTATIONS.
