THE WORLD'S CHAMPION WRESTLER. ARRIVAL OF MR. JACK CARKEEK.

The mail steamer Ventura reached the wharf at nine o'clock this morning bringing among her passengers from Sydney Mr Jack Carkeek,. accompanied by Merzouk, the Algerian, who i 9 undoubtedly the champion Graeeo-Romon. wrestler of the world. Merzouk wa3 in Australia prior to Carkeek's arrival, and met the champion seven times during the latter's Australian er-gngenient. During thesa meetings Carkeek was a.ble to obtain but one fall within the stipulated time, 15 minutes. Carkeek's admiration for the Algerian's wrestling powers was so great that he decided to engage Merzouk for the present shor; Auckland season, 'and will afterwards be accompanied by him throughout' the forthcoming American tour. Carkeak makes the same offer to all comers in the Graeco-Roman style only on behalf of Merzouk as he has done for himself, ■viz., that he will give £10 to any man capable of opposing Merzouk for 15 minutes without being thrown. In conversation with the champion, who is in the pink of condition, Mr Harry Pecrce's name cropped up. Mr Carkeek said: "I will pay him all expenses to Auckland from wherever he.may bs and give him £25 if I do not beat him ten times in one hour, in either tatch-esn, Graeco-Roman, or Cornish style, Whichever he may prefer. I shall be very pleased during my st-'y in Auckland to meet all comers, and pledge my word of honour not to injure any one in the smallest degree. My stay here is limited to twelve nighta."
