INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITAL
GAOL RESERVE SITE REFUSED. At a meeting this afternoon of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, Mr. G. J. Garland presiding, a letter was read from Sir Joseph Ward, lVlinister for Public Health, in connection with the Board's 'proposal that the Government should hand over the Auckland gaol reserve as a site for an infectious diseases hospital. The question Itad been fully considered, and the Minister regretted to inform the Board that he could not see his way to accede to the request. Irrespective of alienating the reserve from the purpose for which it was intended, he was of opinion that the situation did not command itself as suitable. The letter concluded: "It seema to mc that if the BoarJ were to acquire a few additional acres at Point | Chevalier, a sufficient area to meet all ' requirements in the nature of hospitals I would be available, and that the cost of dealing with the whole hospital question would be greatly reduced."
