THE GOLDFIELDS.

ON 'CHANGE. The week opened to fairly good business on the Exchange to-day. New Moanataiari shares, which sold as low as 1/5 on Saturday, advanced to 1/11 this morning, and by noon transactions took place up to 2/1. Later on prices eased to 1/11, with buyers at 1/9. Mahara Royal shares sold freely from ll>d ■to 11 id, with buyers left at lid. A good advance-took place in New Alburn i a shares, rising steadily from sales at lljd this moruiug to 1/3 at noon, with free transactions at intermediary rates, and an 'unsatisfied demand at 1/3. So far the cause for the sudden demand has not transpired. Kuranui and Kuranui Caledonian were neglected, but New Saxons sold at 4d, and Eclipse shares were wanted at Bd. Waihi Extended shares maintained the advance noted oh Saturday by again selling at 8/2, with further buyers at 8/. Talisman Consolidated shares were easier, being offered at G/9. For Coromandel shares there was a little better inquiry, and the prices offered did not lead to business. Golden Belt paid-up shares sold at 3/2, with buyers still offering 3/. In standard lines, buyers of B.JNi.Z. shares adanced their offers to 122/b', and a rise f 2/6 from Saturday, and N.Z. insurnee shares firmed a shilling, being wanted at 96/. K.T.C. paid-up shares were also firmer to-day ; being inquired ior at 14/6. Other lines maintained last week's prices. NEW ECLIPSE. The quartz in the drive upon the Eclipse reef at the low level was hard and difficult to bore through at the junction with the Vulcan lode, some 12 to 15 feet of ore having to be penetrated in order to reach the hanging-wall of the Eclipse reef. A start has now been made to drive on this hanging-wall, and it is intended to take along with the drive from 4 to f> feet of the reef. The quartz broken during the week is reported to have shown strong colours of gold. The country w excellent sandstone interlaced with nice mineral veins. NEW ALBURNIA. The extension of the- Moanataiari tunnel was resumed this morning with the object of getting under the Alburnia section. In the meantime operations on Kos. 1 and 2 reefs are lo be suspended. In the drive on No. 1 reef, the junction with what is thought to be the Golden Age reef was met with, and some fairly good mineral was seen, but as the ore body was penetrated the quartz became less kindly.
