A TRIBAL WAR.
IN THE NEW Natives Killed and Eaten. (Received 9.29 ajn.) SYDNEY, this day. News received from the islands contains some details of a tribal war which is now in progress on Tanna Tslanri, in the New Hebrides. It appears that when one of the tribes lost one of its members by death, due entirely to natural causes, they sought to avenge his death by killing a neighbouring tribesman. As a consequence hostilities are now raging. In one encounter five men were killed and eaten. (Received 9.56 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The Rev. Mr. Paton states that twothirds of the people of Tanna Island are engaged in a tribal war. [Tanna Island is in the south of the New Hebrides group. Some interest is centred in it from the work upon it and the surrounding islands of the Presbyterian mission. At Tanna Island itself Mr. Paton, son of a highly-esteemed and successful missionary, is in chief charge. His work there, in the opinion of those best qualified to judge, has been unpre cedentedly good and successful.]
