POLICE COURT.—THIS DAY.

- (Before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M.) : The Drunkards: Andrew Kelly was fined 10/ or 48 hours' imprisonment for drunkenness, his second offence within six months, and a first offender was fined 5/ and costs. Alleged House-breaking: William Joseph Gallagher and James David Murphy were charged with breaking and entering the house of Alexander Phillips last night, with intent to commit a crime therein. Chief Detective Marsack asked that the men should be remanded until Friday, as there had been no time to secure all the evidence wanted. Otae of the accused was arrested on the prosecutor's premises, and the other had been apprehended at five o'clock that morning. Accused were remanded until Friday on bail. A Charge Dismissed: Robert Woodside, a Qn___-s_reet tobacconist and res-taurant-keeper, was charged with transacting b__i_-_ss on a Sunday. Dr. Bamford, who defended, said that Woodside had already been convicted for a similar offence on the same day, and that His Worship could not convict for two similar charges under those circumstances. Sub-Inspector Black, who prosecuted, said that one offence was committed early in the day, and tlie otljer at eight p.m. His Worship decided to hear the evidence, and Constable Cummings deposed that he saw a boy leave Woodside's shop with a packet of cigarettes and some matches in his hand. The boy gave a false name and addre-s, and could not be found. Mr. Bamford submitted that there was no evidence to answer, and His Worship agreed, the information being dismissed without the solicitor being called upon to argue the legal point raised.
