SCOW SURPRISE ASHORE.
A PERILOUS EXPERIENCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WANGANUI, this day. Word has been received here that the scow Surprise was driven ashore two miles south, of the Manawatu River last night. She had a cargo of timber consigned to local merchants, and only a portion of it is insured. She has evidently been blown south 'by the heavy gale raging. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, this day. ' Yesterday afternoon, during a westerly gale, the sailing vessel Surprise, bound from Kaipara to Wanganui, was blown out of her course. While the gale was at its height she was struck by a huge wave, which carried away her steering gear and washed a passenger named Nixon Scott overboard. Scott was not seen again. The vessel ultimately struck the beach two miles south of Manawatu river. She lies well up on the beach, and great difficulty will be experienced in re-floating her.
