Two misprints occurred in the letter on sterilising plants, published last night—l2odeg. far. should read 270deg., and lignation liquation. Mr John Johnson, commenting on Mr Witheford's proposals for increased ('uties or protection for local industr es : t prevent the dumping of foreign goods lir to our market, expresses disbelief in the existence of dumping. He also considers the proposal inconsistent with Mr Witheford's expressed anxiety for the encouragement of gold-nrning and land settlement, the products of which must be exchanged for foreign manufactures. "Old Colonist," who states that his mother witnessed the first regatta held in Auckland in 1840, and that he remembers a regatta 50 years ago, expresses gratification at the success of ' the Auckland Regatta Club. He thinks that representations should be made to the Minister who has control over the issue of totalisator permits to refuse his sanet : on for races at Takapuna on Regatta Day, it being in the interests of Auckland shipbuilding that Anniversary Day should be devoted to acquatic sports.
