FREEZING WORKS BURNED.
The Waitara Freezing Works were destroyed by fire on July 25. The stock comprised 6000 carcases of mutton, valued at £5000. and 1400 quarters beef, valued at £2500, all of which was destroyed. One thousand hides were salvaged, but 120 boxes of butter were destroyed. The insurances are: London and Lancashire £9000, and North British £9000. The New Zealand Insurance Company's risk expired a fortnight previcraaly, and was not renewed. Messrs Borthwick hold an open policy in Lloyd's, of London, on tbe stock. The manure and tallow departments were saved by a brick wail, which, when the former fire occurred, prevented its spread from the tallow department to the freezing works. The fire is supposed to have started from the sparks from the chimney reaching the roof. Practically everything was destroyed except the departments saved, as stated before, by the brick waiL The buildings stood on land belonging to the Waitara Harbour Board. A clause in the lease provides for rebuilding.
