A COSTLY SCHEME. (By Telegraph—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Union Steamship Co., replying to a communication from the Government regarding the opening of a direct service between Wellington and the Cook and Society Group alternatively with Auckland, states that £1500 a month would be required, half of which, about £10,000 a year would have to be supplied by the Government to form a subsidy. The company consider there is no present prospects of the proposed service being self-supporting. The Government have again written asking the company to run a mail service during the best months of the year, but no reply has been received.
