A POPULAR CORNER.
RAID UPON ALLEGED LOITERERS. A well-frequented spot .-$&, Queen street, known as ''bookies' corner," was raided by the police on May 31st and June. 2nd. with the object of clearing it of bookmakers and clients, who are alleged to obstruct the footpath. The result was that no fewer than 23 well-dressed defendants were charged in the Police Court this morning with a breach of the City Council's by-laws by loitering in Queen street and obstructing the pavement. Mr. J. C. Martin represented several of the throng of defendants, and said they pleaded not guilty. The Bench agreed to the adjournment. The names of the defendants are James Mcllhone, George Campbell, Robert McMasters, John Ryan, Charles Philpot, Charles Fenton, William Lyons, Martin- Taylor, John Davidson, John Tobias, Tobias Tobias, William Bush, Robt. Cleland, William Ryan, Alfred Adams, Richard May, Charles Andrews, Daniel McLeod, Alfred D. Gwet, Robert Blaikie, Alfred Coleman, James Beckett and Matthew Barnett.
