THE CANNING EXPERT.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. Mr W. Jacques, who has been appointed fruit and vegetable canning expert for the colony, left London on the 19th inst. for New Zealand. Mr Jacques was for eleven years manager for Cunningham, De Fourier and Co., manufacturers of canned preserves, London. The Government had intended also getting a canned fruit expert from Canada, but the arrival of Mr Jacques will probably be awaited before a second appointment is made. The new expert's duties will be to instruct fruitgrowers in the work of canning their products. At present there is a large annual waste of fruit, and it is hoped that by proper instruction and by placing the industry on an organised footing a good export trade will be opened up.
