TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday The yearlings. Harvest. Gay Spark, and Clanchattan, which recently arrived from Stonevhursc to join E. Cutts' team, have all been broken in and ridden; the first named, who is a full brother to Goldenmere, is a bad legged youngster; (Jay Spark, who is a half brother to Treadmill, is disfigured by calf kne?s; but Clanchattan, who is a full brother to Tessera, is a nice colt, of the low, thick set type. Since my last letter, a further batch of youngsters has arrived at Cutts', also from Stouyhurst. It consists of Connie Brae, a good looking tall sister to Chryseis and Glonowlet,a half sister to Quarryman, who promises well. In addition to the abovementioned youngsters. Cutts' team has been strengthened by To-morrow, who has been put Into work again. The daughter of Bill of Portland has developed into a fine mare, and it Is honed that she is cured of the malady which has been troubling her for the past twelve months. J. Scoullar; who was injured when Zealous fell in the Kildare Hurdle Race at the C J.C. autumn meeting, 'underwent an operation in the hospital on l-'riday. On latest advices, he was progressing favourably, although not out of danger. Mr RateluTe. ahother local horseman, who met with an accident while riding work on the New. Brighton racecourse, and

broke a thigh, was discharged, from the hospital on Saturday. Two ponies have arrived at Riccarton t» be trained; one. a gelding by Telemeter, has gone into Lewis' hands, the ether into Longley 1 * stable. Magical, who ran in the hack races at tbe same meeting is a full brother to tne hurdle racehouse Slow Tom. He is not very like his relative. Before running in the Timarn Cup, Stepdancer burst one of her feet; that Is the reason why she did cot start on the second day of the South Canterbury meeting. Among a detachment from Yaidnurst, which visited Riccarton one morning last week, were the untried two yesr olds Golden Knight, Uranus, and Carcanet. All three are fine colts. Golden Knight, who is a half brother, by Wallace, to Aurois. particularly showing promise, though he Is very backward. Mr Robinson, a resident of Christchurch, has patented a totallsator which automatically registers the numbers of tickets purchased, a marble being released by the act of stamping each ticket. He 'has also invented a machine for double event betting. Although I don't pretend to be able to pick the winner of the Thompson Handicap, I would as soon back Starshoot ana Bagpipes as anything engaged in the race. The thoroughbred stallion Currassow, by Cuirassier Albatross, was sold at Tattersail's on Saturday to Mr W. "Witty for 21 guineas. J. McCombe has instructed Mr Wilford to abandon his appeal to the Racing Conference in regard to his disqualification by the Canterbury Jockey Club fdr foul riding in the last New Zealand' Cup.
