SCHOOL COMMITTEE REPORTS

AUCKLAND CITY. The annual report of the City Schools Committee, to be presented to the meeting of householders on Monday evening next states that 1698 children were presented for examination at the city schools, and 1494 passed. The average attendances at the various schools was as follows: Wellesley-street, 529; Beres-ford-street, 607; Napier-street, 518; Nelson-street, 425; Chapel-street, 249. On the whole the attendance of tne pupils had been satisfactory. Thirtyseven parents were prosecuted and fined for the illegal absence of their children. Application had been made through the Boaijd to the Minister of Education to constitute one of the five Auckland city schools a high school, as to do so would confer a great boon upon the many parents of children attending our schools. The application had net yet been granted. The schools had been visited by members of the committee, and various repairs and improvements recommended, many of which were satis: factorily carried out under the direction of the Board's architects, but the necessary addition and improvements to Beresfoid-street school and the proposed wing to Nelson-street still remained undone. The committee testified to the excellent work done by the headmasters and their staffs, and to the good understanding Which existed between them, the parents and the committee. Mention was made of the various successes achieved by pupils of the schools in the scholarship examinations. The buildings and grounds were in an efficient state of repair. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts, including a balance, from the previous year of £44 3/3, amounted to £669 4/. The grants for ordinary incidental purposes amounted to £527 7/5. The expenditure amounted to £637 13/9, leaving a credit balance of £31 10/3. The cleaning of schools and outbuildings absorbed 16/, repairs £95 15/5, and school stationery £108 17/4.
