A MINISTERIAL EXPLANATION.
WELLINGTON, Tuesday. In regard to Mr Massey's remarks at Lawrence on the borrowing of money for the purchase of land for settlement, the '•Times" states, on inquiring from Ministers, that "The Leader of the Opposition i 3 evidently in ignorance of the true position of a ffairs. He questioned the wisdom of borrow money in England and exhausting our credit. We had, he said, to go to England for most of the money for the purchase of lands for settlements and thus the ownship of j our lands wa3 slowly but gradually! passing to people outside the colony. As j a matter of fact, outside of moneys relent that have come in for paying off! mortgages, no money has been raised for the purpose of puchasing land under the Land for Settlements Act during the last two years outside the colony."
