Nominations closed to-day for the Mayoralty of the Borough of Grey Lynn. Messrs J. Farrell and A. Donald were the candidates nominated. Concerning the North Auckland railway, the Under - Secretary for Public Works has written to the chairman of the Kaipara Flats branch of the Railway League explaining that -more than half of the men on the North Auckland extension were working at the tunnel, and that of the total vote of £15,000 the Minister had already incurred liabilities of £12,846, leaving only £21.54 unpledged on March Ist. After this letter had been discussed by the Kaipara Flats branch the meeting passed a resolution expressing intense dissatisfaction with the state of affairs, and asserting that very little progress had been made with the £ 12,000 which was said to have been spent. A phase of the birth-rate question was touched on at the Arbitration Court today. One witness, a former tram conductor, was asked if he thought a man could keep himself, his wife and family on 38/ a week. Not being a married man, the witness did "not feel competent to answer. Mr Brown, one of the assessors, suggested that the great majority of the conductors were single, whereupon Mr Way remarked that if the wage paid was so low that a man could not afford to marry, then the waitings about a declining birth-rate must be expected to increase.
