DROWNING AT WAIKINU.

A sad drowning fatality occurred at" Wadkino about 7130 A • man named Robert Colledge, foreman of the Waihi Company's stone • quarry," ia company with two otheA men, were; proceeding to work. They had to cro-f the Ohinemuri River by means of • punt at the crossing below Mr. .MurrtyV house. It is understood that Colledge was in the act of stepping into the punt when he slipped and fell into tie /*»- ttr and was carried further down stream, where it is ten feet deep. The unfortunate man was unable to swim, and his companions were unable to reader material assistance. . Colledge was sbme 15 minutes in the water before as- , sistance arrived. He was then taktn out by means of an iron hook. Every effort was made by Mrs. Fraser, who is a skilled operator, and others, to rt*- ( store life, while the company's engine proceeded to Waihi, bringing back Br. Sinter, but the latter could only pronounce life extinct. Deceaseds-father arrived shortly afterwards. Much Mgret is expressed on ascount- of -the sftu occurrence.
