Mr T. W. Rhodes has been elected president of the Coromandel School of Mm e=. Mr. George Lumsden, who had been for many years in the forefront of public affairs in Southland, is dead. He had almost completed his 89th year. He had filled many positions; was member of the Provincial Council and Executive, and afterwards the member ior the town in the Assembly, a. borough councillor and Mayor, member of Board, president of the Caledonian Society, and of the Pioneers" Settlers' Association Dr. F. T. Bayntun, who contemplates a visit to the Old Country, was recently the recipient of a presi-nt from the Loyal Pioneer Lodge. Dr. Bakewell returned to Auckland from Wellington yesterday. Mr. Matthews. Chief Government Forester, arrived in Auckland from Wellington on Saturday. Canon French, of Westmoreland (England), who has been staying at the Grand Hotel for some days, went up to Rotorua, to-day with his family. Aitken Carriek. and Mr and Mrs Colbeck are joining the Westralia at Auckland en route for England. Mr E. Gerard. Official Assignee, left for XeRT PiymeTTth to-day to attend a sitting of the District Court in connection wr.h a bankruptcy case. He •will not he back until the end of the week. Mr. F. L. Be-art. of Dargaville. passed away on Wedne'/a™ last. Some months ago he had a paralytic stroke, and ever since got about with difficulty. At the end of last week a further stroke of paralysis hastened his end. deceased leaves a widow and three sons. He was second son of the late Lieutenant Charles Beart. of the Royal Navy, England, and had resided in the Kaipara district for some twenty- five years or more. Mr. and Mrs. J. Barugh, of the Waikato. have decided to take a year's trip to the O!d Country, probably leaving next month. A good deal of time will be spent in Mr. Barugh's native county of Yorkshire. The Rev. C. Wansbones is to be welcomed at Dargaville on March Ist at a special soiree by wav of expressing the pleasure of the local Presbyterians at his being permanently appointed to reside there. The Rev. W. Gray Dixon (moderator of the district) is to be invited to be present. The Rev. H. Bull, Connexional Secretary for the New Zealand Methodist Conference, have arrived in Auckland to make arrangements ior the Conference, which is to be begun in Auckland on March 3rd. The suggested Union with the Presbyterian and Congregational Churches will be one of the most important subjects for the consideration of the Conference.
