The Jews on the Atlantic coast of have initiated a war fund with the object of providing Japan with a new warship. Owing to the danger incurred by run- ' I ning. trains over the Ice of Lake Baikal: j the troops destined tor the Far East are i crossing the lake on foot. Meanwhile the war material and provisions are being transported by means of -a. temporary rail-way. Lake Baikal is commonly crossed by ' means of large '"icebreakers^ , : but the process of breaking is necessarily slow. at any time, and on some occasions it lis all but impossible.
