RAILWAY AND TOURISTS.
NEW OFFICES OPENED. SPEECH BY TiiE GOVERNOR. (By Telegraph.—Press Association > WELLINGTON, Monday. The new Railway Department offices, a large three-storeyed building, in Featherston-streef, the foundationstone of which was laid by the Prince of Wales on Iris visit to Wellington, were opened this afternoon by the Governor in the presence of a consider able number of invited guests. His Excellency; in the course of a speech, spoke.of the importance of the North Island Main Trunk line, which he thought would bo open to traffic ere long. He pointed to the development of tourist traffic, and remarked that with good hotels and facilities for travel New Zealand would reap from tourists financial benefits similar to those secured by Switzerland.
Sir Joseph Ward Kpoke of the progress and the improvement of the railway service during the last few yearsThough there had been considerable development the G-overnment had in concessions and allowances given back to the users of the railways a sum amounting to £110,000.
