REMUERA MUSICAL SOCIETY.
At St. Mark's Hall on Friday, before a fair muster of their patrons, the IU-nnwn Musical Society gave their 'third concert of the season. The first part of the evening wan n miscellaneous one, and second WRS devoted to the perfonmunee of Sterndale Bennett's melodious and light cantata, "The May Queen." The concert commenced with an instrumental quartette, nicely played by Mrs MaeAndrew, Misses Fenton and Lewis " and Prof. Bgertou; this was fo I - lowed by the songs "Summer Emn and "Th» Four-leafed Clover," fairly well snug by M'ss Tavlor. Mr S. Cousins contributed the airs "The River and the Sea" and ' Ihe Rose," and Mr Taylor was heard In the aolo "The Song and Thought." For their careful refine? of an instrumental trio, Mrs MaeAndrew, Miss -Lewie, and Prof. Egertou wore deservedly applsuued. me cautata was very smoothly rendered by 46 executants. The opening chorus 'Awake. Awake!" was carefully sung. The expression -mis good in "O Melancholy Plight. An effective delivery was given of "«]<* -J Laugh." The tends were good in "111-fated Boy." "Hark! Their Notes," was sweetly suns, and a suitable performance was secured of the closing chorus, "The Cloud Until Passed Away." Miss Gertrude Hunt gave wy creditable renderings of the soprano solos. Miss Bnddle won much success in the Queen's airs. Mr W. E. Taylor's singing of the tenor solos pleased the audlen'eo: and Mr Guy Pierce made an acceptable "Captain of the Foresters." The work by the orchestra was better than usual, and their efforts were felt to advantage in the cantata. Mr H. Connell conducted with judgment, while Mrs MaeAndrew made a capable accompanist; and Mr G. W. Bews, the secretary, successfully attended to the comfort of tiie subscribers.
