SUNDAY TRAMS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—When reading the "Star"' of yesterday I saw a copy of Mr Hansen's letter addressed to the employees of the Tram Company, also the statement that 216 of their men had declared for Sunday running. On the surface it would appear that the men in question are almost as anxious for the few shillings of Sunday pay as the proprietors are for larger dividends. Such, however, is not the case. I have for some time past been inquiring from the men themselves, and learn that the large majority of tram employees object to the innovation. They, however, say that they must conform, otherwise they will be dismissed. The public have been told that the declaration for Sunday work by the men was obtained without pressure. This is not true. I am informed that when first applied to the men did not sign in any numbers, then pressure was gradually brought to bear until Anally a prominent official has canvassed some of the men several times. The aforesaid official- did, it is true, icform the men that they could please themselves, but he "strongly advised" them to sign. I trust all lovers of fair play and Sabbath decency will vote against the proposed running on Sunday.—l am, etc., 11. E. PACEY. September 23, 1903.
