A considerable number of men arc being dispensed with in the Westport Coal Co.'s Denniston and Millerton collieries owing to slackness in 'the demand for coal, which is alleged to bo due to largo importations of Newcastle coal. NAPIER, this day. The work of preparing the Government vinery at Havelock is now rapidly proceeding. In addition to 20 acres purchased the Government have leased 70 acres from Mr Chambers with the right of purchase. Mr S. F. Anderson, for many years manager of Greenmeadows vineyard, has been appointed manager. GISBQRNE, this day. The Supreme Court -Criminal Sessions were opened this morning before Mr Justice Cooper. His Honor, in. his charge to the Grand Jury, referred in sympal.hetie terms to the retirement of Judge Conolly. There is a light calender; No bHlvvas found in the ease of Margaret Arm Mitfield, charged with assault. DUNEDIN, this day. Alf. Brown was charged in the Police Court with, having 19 tins of opium in his possession. Defendant (forecabin steward oi the stenmer Warrimpo) intended ,to dispose of the opium at Duhedin. He pleaded for. mercy, as the case had already cost him his situation, and £28 for opium, whkh he had to forfeit, and he had a large family. He was lined £ 10 and costs. . •'•
