AUCKLAND DEFEATED BY

WELLINGTON,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, Wednesday.

The annual tournament for the Brown challenge shield between representative Association teams from the four principal centres was commenced here to-day, when the Auckland reps, met the Wellington team at Miramir. Wellington Avon by four goals to one. The play was a great improvement on that shown during the tournament played here three years ago. Mayall drew first blood by scoring for the visitors soon after the game commenced. Three of Wellington's goals were obtained by Mouat, Phillips and Clark, and the fourth from a scramble in -which not even the playera knew who scored. The best feature of the game was the dribbling. The shooting at goal was weak on both sides.
