ENGINE-DRIVERS' CERTIFICATES."

EQUALITY CLAUSE ABANDONED

(By Telegraph—Parliamentary Reporter.)

WELLINGTON, Friday

After hearing further evidence on the Inspection of Machinery Act Amendment Bill, the Labour Bills Committee has withdrawn the amendment made by the introduction of a new clause providing that, subject to existing awards of the Arbitration Court, certificates of service aud certificate of competency shall for all purposes rank

equally. The introduction was objected to by the Employers' Association, which said it had not had opportunity to give evidence before the committee. The Legislative Council accordingly referred the bill hack to the committee.

This afternoon the committee reported that it had taken further evidence and recommended that the bill be allowed to proceed without amendment. This menus that the bill is restored to the state in which it came from the House, and that the committee has on second thoughts abandoned the equality clause.
