THE CUSTOMS CONVENTION

CAPETOWN, July 29. The Legislative Council has passed the Customs Convention.
It was only by the casting vote of Sir J. H. de Villiers, the president, that Mr Ben Viljoen's amendment, eliminating the principle of preference and revising the duties with a view to " protecting local industries, was rejected. .
