A telegram received from Napier on the ooth inst states that the Tyser Company'? steamer Niwaru struck on the rocks Dear the break-water when coming in that morning. She was damaged in the vicinity of N0..4 hold, where inward cargo only wns stowed, and which had to be jettisoned Cargo Id other holds was also discharged. The vessel was subsequently taken closer into the breakwater for greater protection in the event of bad weather. She was afterwards floated, and after the magisterial !inqtiiry, which was opened 'at Nap'er on Monday. July 27, the steamer will be brought to Auckland for docking and repairs. The American barque Mary L. Cashing, which sprang a leak whilst on a voyage from Newcastle to Honolulu, and put into this port In a" leaky condition on June 22nd, was surveyed by Captain M. T. Clayton* Jsurveyor to Lloyd's register; Captain C. Plnnkett, local underwriters' surveyor; and Mr W. H. Brown, boatbuilder; and it was found to be weak in a t#% ftlacee near the -waterilne, but.
the remainder of the hull was sound. The weak spots, which were a considerable distance out of the water when the vessel was lightened, have been caulked. It was expected the vessel would have resumed her voyage by this time, but trouble with some of the seamen, who alleged the vessel was unseaworthy, has caused her departure to be postponed. Five of the crew were imprisoned for iusubordinatiou. After beinz in the vicinity of Cook's Straits for 21 days, during which time thrpp vain endeavours to make Wellington harbour were made, the ship King George, bound from New York and Fremantle to Wellington and Auckland, arrived here on the 20th inst., little the worse for her experiences, the only damage reported betn& the loss of a number of sails. The vessel !S now discharging her cargo for this port, but her future movements are uncertain. .
The ship Emily Reed, which cleared Hobart on June 26th, for Simou's Town, put into Lyttelton ou the 13th inst., through stress of weather. The captain deciares the gale he encountered, 3U miles southward of the Suares was 'worse thau the severest typhoon. He denies that the vessel is unseaworthy. The crew have deCfued to rejoin the ship, and it is stated that a survey will be made by two. , experts, one on behalf of the captain, and the other for the crew, the ship bearing all expenses. . '
