THE STEAMER NIWARU.
NAUTICAL INQUIRY
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, Tuesday. The work of stopping the Niwaru's leak was carried on with such success to-day that the water in No. 4 hold waa got down so far as to permit of. those on board standing on the propeller .shaft tunnel. As much water was got out of the vessel as was possible, and the work of discharging the damaged cargo in this hold will be proceeded with. Another paunch mat to cover the whole of the damaged portion of the vessel is be? m<, , made. The diver will go down again tumorrow to examine the rudder and sternposts, to which it is supposed some little damage has been done. Tt is anticipated the steamer will be able to leave for Auckland about the end of this week. ■ The magisterial inquiry into the accident to the Niwaru continued to-day. Evidence was given by Messrs Jardine chief officer; Compton, second officer; Campbell, third officer; Forbury, the 'look-out man; and Watts, the steersman; which was generally corroborative j ■of that given by Captain Fishwick yes- j terday. All stated that the captain was j on the bridge the whole of the time, and exercised every care in the navigation of the vessel. Evidence was also given by Captain Lake, the harbourmaster, ami chief pilot, and E. Forme, assistant pilot. This concluded the evidence, arid to-mor-row the counsel engaged will address the Court.
