'•ACCIDENTAL DEATH."
WAIMATE, Monday,
An inquest was held this afternoon as to the circumstances of the death of John Meager, the platelayer killed on the railway near Willowbridge on Saturday. The evidence of the driver of the express trr.in to Christclmrch was that deceased fell from a slight rise alongside the line in front of the engine", and struck the buffer, aud was killed. Another platelayer named Gardiner, who was with deceased, gave corroborative evidence. The driver and fireman of the express said the men wore under the influence ot liquor, and Constable Christie arrested Gardiner for being drunk when he readied Studholme by express immediately after the accident. The jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death accidentally, and no blame was attached to anyone. The coroner disagreed with the
