P TOUCHING SCENES
ROME, July 27
The Capitularies, escorted by a body of the Noble Guards, and followed by Papal dignitaries and prelates, bore the hody of the late Pope to the Choir Chapel, where the Cardinals occupied the stalls on either side of the bier, the diplomatists and nobility filling the galleries. After , the '. chanting of the prayers the Absolution was pronounced.
The face of the dead Pope was then covered with a white veil and' the body With, a red silk pall. It was placed in a cypress coffin with three purses containing coins and medals, equal to the years of the Pope's pontificate; also a parchment ■ panegyric. The officers commanding the Swiss Guards and the Papal gendarmes kissed the feet before placing the lid on the coffin, which was sealed and encased in a leaden casket. It was finally enclosed in an elm coffin and deposited in a sarcophagus outside the Choir Chapel until the permanent tomb is ready. The whole scene was most solemn and touching. Many wept. Bells were tolled throughout. It is estimated that 35,000 people witnessed the lying-in-state.
