NAPIER, this day.
D. McAlister, master of the steamer Toroa, was fined £2 and costs for a breach of the Shipping Act in proceeding to sea without a certificated engineer.
WANGAM Ui, this day,
The sheep returns for the district between the Rangitikei and Mokau Kivers show a decrease of 233,291, as compared with last year, and for the Wanganui district of (37,000, the biggest detlciency. The other districts are as iollow:—Hawera, 50.000; Stratford, 35,000; Patea, 32,000; Kangitikei, 29,000. The decrease is due largely to settlers turning their attention to dairying.

The bolls in the Roman Catholic Churches tolled for an hour this morning on the receipt of the news of the Pope's death. A special mass will be celebrated during the week.

On the receipt of the news of th? death i i the Pope the Pro-Cathedral bell wzi tolled. A grand requiem mass will be celebrated on Tuesday.
OAMARU, this day
At a full meeting of tradesmen last night a resolution, strongly condemning the proposal to make the Saturday halfIvjiiday compulsory, was carried unanimously, and it was decided to promote a petition against the clause.
WANGANUI, this day
A young Maori woman, wife of Mr. Xtil Wilson, of Kauangaroa, committed BUcide this morning, taking strychnine. Her husband went outside the house, and on returning some little time after foetid his wife on the floor and a bottle containing strychnine on the table. Emetics were applied unavailingly. Deceased had been depressed on account of tht loss of a child two months ago.
ASHBTJ.RTON, this day. The new Somerset Hotel, buildings and freehold, together with the adjoining shop properties known aa the Jubilee Buildings, livery stables and sample rooms, liava been sold to a syndicate. The price is upwards of £16,000. The contract price for the hotel building, which was recently erected, was nearly £10,000. The business block on the op posite corner was also recently sold Many town and country properties are changing hands at enhanced values.
