D. McAlister, master of the steamer Toroa, was fined £2 and costs for a breach of the Shipping Act in proceeding to sea without a certificated engineer.

The sheep returns for the district between the Rangitikei and Mokau Kivers show a decrease of 233,291, as compared with last year, and for the Wanganui district of (37,000, the biggest detlciency. The other districts are as iollow:—Hawera, 50.000; Stratford, 35,000; Patea, 32,000; Kangitikei, 29,000. The decrease is due largely to settlers turning their attention to dairying.

A young Maori woman, wife of Mr. Xtil Wilson, of Kauangaroa, committed BUcide this morning, taking strychnine. Her husband went outside the house, and on returning some little time after foetid his wife on the floor and a bottle containing strychnine on the table. Emetics were applied unavailingly. Deceased had been depressed on account of tht loss of a child two months ago.
