BIRKENHEAD WATER SUPPLY.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —In your issue of the 16th inst. there appeared over the signature of four members of the Bixlcenhead Borongh Council Water Committee a letter referring to some remark of mine at a late meeting of the Northcote ratepayers. I have no desire to enter into a newspaper controversy with these gentlemen, but I think it well to poinL out that my statement that the Birkenhead representatives had been blind to their own interests did not imply that they "W'«t* antagonistic to a joint scheme. Those who acted with me as the representatives of Northcote were, with myself, fully satisfied that these gentlemen wanted a joint scheme, but Wanted it on terms which we considered unfair to our district. I will not trouble your readers with our reasons for arriving at this conclusion; they are too lengthy, and you have already published them, and the curious may obtain all information by consulting your tiles of about nine months back. Your correspondent's remarks, sir. re our being unwilling to join Birkenhead are totally without point to anyone who knows anything of the matter. Your report, which, by the was an excellent one, of the meeting to which your correspondents have referred, will show what my position in the matter is, and has ever been. I ask myself the reason of Messrs "White, Thompson, Taylor, and Keyes : letter, and I wonder is it a part of the new move which I see is now being made to discredit the scheme presented by the County Council. —I am, etc, A. WATERWOETH.
